Grower Stories #89: Alexander Corwin

An Interview With California-Based Organic Cannabis Brand Stone Road

There are few places in the world that produce better cannabis than Southern California. Something about the soil, sun, and passionate growers and cannabis industry entrepreneurs is a perfect recipe for top-quality weed. One of those organic, trendy brands is Stone Road. That’s why AskGrowers sat down with Alexander Corwin, CEO and founder of organic California-based cannabis brand Stone Road, about the origins of the brand, what makes their products special, and advice for upstart cannabis entrepreneurs. #growerstories

Tia (AskGrowers) : What inspired you to get into the cannabis industry?

Alexander Corwin : I grew up in New York City and when I was a junior in high school I spent a semester studying at an agriculture-specific school. That was my basic introduction to agriculture and since I’ve always been interested in cannabis, it made sense to mix the two.

Tia : How did you start Stone Road? Tell us your origin story!

Alexander : I started growing on a property called Stone Road, which is where the name of the company comes from! I then went to college in Portland, Oregon, got involved in the industry there, then after college I moved to Southern California and started thinking about diving into the industry full-time.

Tia : What difficulties have you faced while running the brand at first?

Alexander : While every business in every industry usually has some struggles starting out, I think cannabis is probably a little more difficult. It’s a brand-new industry, with rules, regulations, and tons of stakeholders in the space. It’s very overtaxed, it’s hard to do banking, and it’s hard to raise money.

Tia : What makes your joints different from other brands who produce the same stuff? What sets you guys apart from the rest?

Alexander : The biggest difference between me and a lot of my competitors is that we actually grow our own product. California tends to be dominated by white label and third-party grown cannabis. You as a customer don’t really know where your product is coming from. Since we grow our own stuff, not only is the quality going to go up, but the price is going to go down as well.

Tia : Who usually controls the taste and the strength of your joints?

Alexander : Since it’s an agricultural product, there’s always going to be some fluctuations in the strength of quality of each joint. Depending on the genetics and a few other factors. But every one of our products is tested by the state, so customers can trust what they get is quality.

Tia : What’s the best way to store your joints for quality?

Alexander : Our single joints actually already come in a glass storage device, which is usually the best way to go for preserving the life of the product. Somewhere dark and cool is usually best.

Tia : What’s your personal consumption routine? What are the top three products that you’re using?

Alexander : I actually love spliffs and joints. Growing up in New York we didn’t always have a ton of cannabis, so we would cut it with tobacco. I also love ice water hash, which is one of our most popular and potent products.

Tia : What advice would you give to a first-time smoker?

Alexander : Start slow! While it might be really mainstream today, it’s still a drug. Be careful at first!

Tia : If you could smoke with anyone in this world, dead or alive, who would that be and why?

Alexander : [tooltip title="Robyn Rihanna Fenty" content="Popular American singer, songwriter, actress and businesswoman."]Rihanna[/tooltip]. I know she smokes a lot and I love her music!

Tia : Are there any cannabis brands in your state you appreciate and follow? Now is your time to give them a shout-out!

Alexander : I really like Pure Beauty. They’re a cool brand that makes a really good product. I also like Sundae School, which is a Korean-owned brand with really cool design and good edibles.

Tia : If you weren’t involved in the cannabis industry, what would you be doing for work instead?

Alexander : I worked in real estate before cannabis. I’ve also done a lot of design direction and such. The reason I like cannabis because it lets me do all of this stuff under one roof!

Tia : What advice would you give to the upstart cannabis entrepreneur looking to get involved in the industry?

Alexander : Cannabis can be a super competitive industry. I think a lot of people think they’ll just jump into the industry and immediately be successful. In reality, it doesn’t get any easier. You need to be ready and prepared. If you’re getting into this industry, do it for the love of the industry not as a quick cash-grab.
